Healthy Tips for Camping

Welcome to the camping season! We are sure that with the Fourth of July being at the end of this week, there will be many of you out there camping. Moscow Family Medicine would like to give you some tips to help you be safe and healthy during your summer camping trips.

Food Safety:

Be sure to prepare healthy and safe food. Make sure that food is stored in tight, waterproof containers. Also be sure to wash your hands often when preparing meals. Remember to separate raw foods from cooked foods and to cook everything to its proper temperature.

Skin Safety:

Don’t forget to pack the bug repellant spray. Apply the repellant every couple of hours to ensure complete protection. A good tip is to also apply the repellant to clothes for extra protection. Wearing long sleeve shirts and pants is another good way to help protect against the insects that are out there.

While you are protecting yourself from the insects, don’t forget about the sun. Packing sunscreen and applying it often is a great way to prevent harmful sun burns. It is a great idea to grab waterproof sunscreen if you are planning on playing in the water while out. Sunscreen should be applied every couple of hours for better protection.

Here is a quick packing list of some items that might be forgotten:

  • Insect repellant
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen
  • Wide-brimmed hat or sunglasses
  • Water
  • Hand sanitizer
  • First-aid kit
  • Flashlights
  • Extra batteries
  • Sturdy shoes

Hope this help while packing for the weekend. Moscow Family Medicine would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy Fourth of July!
